It is a well-known fact that many people with disabilities choose to own a service dog to help around with little or even more complex tasks around the house. I mean, there’s literally no other animal that’ll treat you with so much love and respect like dogs will, and this is yet one of the many reasons why dogs are man’s best friend. A lot of dog lovers – especially corgi lovers have been wondering if the corgi service dog would do great in providing assistance when needed.

Most times, when the need for a service dog arises, the first dog breeds that come to mind are the retrievers and German shepherds, but corgis are great service dogs too, and they should never be underestimated or overlooked. Beyond their bright shiny eyes and beautiful fur, corgis are intelligent and hardworking dogs, sometimes a little bit too smart.

When it comes to selecting a service dog, a lot of people believe that choosing one with a large body size would get the job done easy and quick, but corgis being dog breeds of a smaller size has proven to be more than just a little dog that plays around. Corgi service dogs have defied all odds that associate strength and might with size – they might be small, but they sure are mighty.

Reasons Why a Corgi Service Dog is Worth Owning

Knowing all the qualities of a corgi service dog will definitely clear all doubts about Corgis being great service dogs or not. Below are some of the reasons why our cute little canine friends are great helpers and companions:

  • They are intelligent dog breeds

Corgis are one of the most intelligent and brilliant dogs in the world. They are smart dogs and always eager to learn, making it easy for them to learn simple tricks and commands. Corgis always go way ahead of their owners and will use the skills and tricks learned for personal use.  One moment you’re training this dog breed to open a door for emergencies and assistance, the next moment Corgis are opening the door, so they can go outside to play. Its high level of intelligence makes it difficult to keep it at bay.

  • They are impressive hearing dogs

Corgis are famously known for their over the roof hearing abilities. A dog that’ll hear you call for help every time you need would pretty much work as a great service dog.

  • Corgis are children lovers

Adding to one of the many reasons why you should love Corgis – they are great dog breeds for scared children. Corgis are small in size, which makes your scared child see them as less of a threat and feel comfortable around this dog breed in no time. They are also very cheerful and will get your children to love them in no time. For children with disabilities, who are also scared of dogs, the Corgi service dog is just the right match.

  • Great watchdogs

With its great hearing skills, unconditional love for its owners and intelligence – Corgis make the perfect small guard dogs for homeowners with little or no space to keep bigger guard dog breeds.

Corgis are always at alert and will alarm its owners if they sense any danger. When they are close enough to make physical contact, they try out different ways to wake their owners up. Other times, when their owners are far away, they bark as loudly as possible. Although Corgis are muscular and strong dog breeds, they are very safe to be around.

  • They also provide emotional support

Being an energetic and very cheerful dog, Corgis will lift your spirit whenever you’re feeling low. So many dogs are great companions for people who just lost a loved one, battling with depression and, many other emotional distress and Corgis are no exceptions – they are great emotional support dogs too.

  • Corgis are great therapy dogs too!

Corgis are also affectionate and even-tempered. They are of good help in schools and nursing homes. Corgis are beautiful dogs with a big heart.

How to care for your Corgi Service Dog

Corgis are usually independent and most times do a whole lot of thinking on their own, which is sometimes seen as a disadvantage, but this doesn’t mean they don’t need all the care and affection they can get.

Pairing corgis up with people with disabilities could sometimes be a difficult task because they need extra grooming. If there’s someone else around, who can help with the grooming and containing the extra shedding of its fur, then great! You’ve got yourself a perfect service dog.
It is important to know that Corgis are herd dogs and will always be on their feet. Taking them out on a walk, jog and, frequent exercises is necessary to keep your Corgi happy.

Get used to trimming its nails and brushing its teeth too. Keeping your corgi neat and healthy is also a great way to get them happy and presentable.

Conclusion

With all these great qualities, it is easy to conclude that Corgi service dogs are brilliant and fun to have around. They are versatile, energetic and, great companions. A lot of service dog organizations do not include this dog breed as a part of their service dogs, just because it thinks way ahead of itself and could be stubborn sometimes – but you can learn how to train your Corgi to make them a lot easier to keep.
