Dogs have over the years proven why they are often regarded as man’s best friend. They are loyal and loving companions who can keep you company and protect you. Dogs are known to be so loyal to their owners that they are ready to lay down their lives to protect their owners from harm.

Over the years, humans have bred dogs selectively to enhance certain dog traits to create specialized dog breeds. One of such dog breeds is guard dogs. Guard dogs are special dogs that are used for the protection of people and belongings from possible dangers. Guard dogs should not be confused for watchdogs as the later is used to alert owners when someone trespasses their property.

Here Are The Top 4 Best Guard Dog Breeds For First Time Owners

Doberman Pinscher

This medium-sized breed is squarely built with a compact and muscular body. Its docked tail, streamline coat, short pointy ears, and athletic body has given it a reputation as one of the best guard dogs in the world. It also has a professional look that most dog owners will love.

The Doberman is also very intelligent and sharp which makes this dog well suited for training, police and military work. The Doberman is a sweet blend of both worlds. It can be effective as a guard dog but can also be lovely and responsive to its owner.

Rottweiler

Over the years, Rottweilers have gotten a bad reputation for being aggressive. However, this is as a result of neglect and poor training. If they are properly trained and socialized from an early age, Rottweilers can become one of the best guard dog for first time owner. Although they have a similar appearance to the Doberman, they are by far more intimidating and stronger.

Rottweilers are very intelligent dogs but can be stubborn. This is why proper training is needed from a young age. If properly trained, they can be very effective as guard dogs and loving companions in the family.

German Shepherd

This dog is extremely intelligent and versatile and this is why they are one of the best guard dog for first time owner. They have been one of the best options as police and military dogs because of their effectiveness as both watch and guard dogs. They are also a great fit for a family with children. German Shepherds are loyal and loving dogs but can always be counted upon to serve as guard dogs.

Great Dane

One of the best guard dog for first time owner, the Great Dane is a very clever, active, and loyal dog. It has a great build which makes it very effective as a guard dog. It has the necessary height and strength to guard your home. Even with their intimidating size, they are quite laid back and can be wonderful family dogs.

With proper training, a Great Dane can be a great guard dog and a wonderful addition to your family.

Training Your Guard Dog Is Important

Guard dogs naturally have strong instincts that can make them a scary sight when they show aggression to people they don’t know. Without proper training and guidance, a guard dog will let its strong instincts get the better of it. Training is also important because it ensures that your dog is obedient, controllable, and will not develop bad habits as it carries out its duties.

One important aspect of dog training is socialization. When a guard dog is exposed to different people and experiences, it can improve its social and decision-making skills. When a guard dog isn’t properly socialized, they become overly aggressive to anyone who comes close to you.

Conclusion

These dog breeds along with their instincts can be great guard dogs when trained and socialized early on. If you need a guard dog that can also function as a watchdog, then breeds like the Rottweiler, Great Dane, and many others might not be suitable as these dogs aren’t known for barking.
